SOME OF MY LEARNINGS:)

·      During the invitation process for the event of CHN through phone, I notice that I slightly improve my communication skills and become more mindful of the words that I should use over the telephone because words are indefinite means of communication and forcing us to be careful on using the right words.

·  Being a trainee here in World Vision allows me to see how the institution specifically my department create ties and linkages to passionately engage our legislators regarding the various child rights and set up different programs to attract more citizens in advocating child rights and considering the child well-being as one of the most essential tool. Moreover, my department also serve and empower the poor communities so that they can develop their own process of development.

·       While I am doing my research about the different programs of the government, I notice that there are only 11 out of 19 Philippine departments in which the institution can intervene and work hand in hand with the departments. For me, I think it is much better if the institution can/will engage all these departments towards its mission and vision so that the child can achieve good life and environment.

·        Teamwork is really valuable in any organizations existing. We need to be more devoted to work as one family to accomplish our mutual goal in the essence of cooperation, communal respect and reliance to each other; therefore, teamwork should permanently be present.

·              Commitment

We will be accountable in the performance of our tasks as we commit ourselves to the dream and duty of the institution and also to the aims of our school to have this preparation in the real world.

A Walk To Remember: Week Five

May 5, 2014

Three days prior to the main event of the CHN Department we were assigned to follow up again the invitations and log all the guests who were coming and not coming. Also, this day we brought some materials that the department would be using in preparing for the kits that will be handed over to the guests and to the legislators.

May 6, 2014

On this day, we attended two meetings. The first meeting we attended is for the Accenture Run on May 10, 2014 at Bonifacio Global City and second is for the main event of the CHN Department on May 7, 2014.

We started our meeting about the Accenture Run at 8:30am; it was led by Kuya Jules from National Resource Development Department, he discussed what was the support needed on the event and he also assigned tasks to everyone that are going to the event.

On the other half of our day, we attended the lunch meeting of the CHN Department. The agenda of this meeting is to finalize the things for the event on the following day and make some alterations on the tasks made in the previous meeting.

After the meeting with the CHN Department, we were given new tasks that will contribute to the event. These are: scanned signatures (petition), cut fan signs for the photo booth and bought additional materials for the event.

The program started an hour late due to we failed to achieve the expected number of the legislators that confirmed. However, there were three representatives that went from the offices of Representatives Maria Lourdes Acosta-Alba, of Bukidnon’s 1st district; Ibarra Gutierrez III of the Akbayan partylist, vice-chair to the committee on the revision of laws; and Teodorico Haresco Jr of Aklan’s lone district and chair of the house committee on Milennium Development Goals.

The World Vision Development Foundation upheld that malnutrition has continued to be the main underlying source of child deaths, in which can be stopped through the campaign of breast milk over infant formulas.

During the culminating event of the CHN Department, WVDF handed the copies of petitions with 7,500 signatures addressing the lawmakers to protect the Milk Code of the Philippines or the Executive Order 51.

The Executive Order 51 guarantees right nutrition for new-borns through campaigning about breastfeeding and the directive of promotion and dissemination of milk formulas and other related products.

Child health supporters believe that breastfeeding could avoid the death of one in five children under five years old in developing countries.

A Walk to Remember: Week Four

Time flies so fast; I’m almost at half of my summer practicum.

April 29, 3014

Since that the event of CHN Department is just around the corner, my supervisor and I, together with my co-interns in the department attended the meeting for the Global Week of Action. The focus of that meeting is the distribution of tasks and what would be the flow of the program. Luckily, Mallory and I were assigned in the registration booth in which we were tasked to welcome the guest and allow them to write their names in which cluster they are affiliated. Also, we were assigned to give an update about the guests who were coming in.

April 30, 2014

During this day, together with the interns of CHN Department we helped them prepare the materials needed for the Survive 5 booth.

Here are the #Survive5 hand pledges
May 2, 2014

We got two jobs for this day; first, we set up the booth for the Global Week of Action which includes petition section, pledges for the support on breastfeeding and photo gallery. On this day, we also assisted the CHN Department to their internal campaign, in which, during our Corporate Friday Devotion time, the CHN Department came up with a short program for the employees and raise their awareness about Milk Code.

Second, we presented our proposed materials to our supervisor for the upcoming Children’s Learning Event. We thought of producing brochures with stickers and things that are written in brochures were the rights of the child itself.

A Walk to Remember: Week Three

Week Three

For the past two weeks of my internship I haven’t felt that I’m currently doing my practicum due to the Holy Week vacation and I’m still adjusting to the work environment in the office.

Last April 22, Ara, Mallory and I started to work on the different House/Senate bills and Republic Acts focused on children in these areas: Education, Health, Nutrition, Disaster Risk Reduction-Climate Change Adaptation (DRR-CCA), Peace Building, Economic Development and Child Protection.

On the following day, together with my co-interns in the Advocacy Department, we followed up the invitations for the event that is spearheaded by the Child Health Now (CHN) department on May 7, 2014.

The highlight of this week is that we had a meeting with the Communication interns. We were tasked to simplify the main tool that the organization will be using in the Children's Learning Event this May 2014 and make the material to be more child friendly for documentation and monitoring whether our government is fulfilling its duty towards a certain thematic cluster such as Special Protection – Child Labor, Special Protection – Child In Conflict with the Law and many more.

The main objectives of this event are:
1.     Strengthen children relationship with God, family and community.
2.     To understand the process on CRC monitoring and be able to contribute in the report.
3.     Sharing of success stories/ good practices on child participation (Education, SNC, ECAP, Econ/CoMsCA, Health, Advocacy, CFDRR, Protection, Comms and etc.)
4.  To better understand the true essence of child participation, child focused  disaster risk reduction, environmental issues and promotion of children’s rights.
         5.   Strengthen relationship and camaraderie among other child representatives

A Walk to Remember: Week One and Two

It’s been a month since I started my internship here at World Vision; there are already a lot of things that changed, gained, and learned during my stay here at World Vision. So let me tell you all the things that I have contributed for the organization over the past five weeks of my internship.

On April 3, 2014, Ms. Aimee Natividad, one of the Human Resource personnel, informed me that I would be placed under the supervision of Ms. Gem Macanan, OIC of the Advocacy Department. During that day also, I personally met Ms. Gem and asks me to produce a one page summer internship objectives so that she can provide a good learning programs and activities for my summer practicum.

 My Learning Objectives

My internship work place

On the week of April 7-11, 2014, I already started to perform the tasks that Ms. Gem has instructed me. First, since that our department is assigned in inviting the main target audience, our lawmakers, for the event spearheaded by the CHN department, I faxed all the invitations that is assigned to me last April 7-8 and called them back if they have received the invitations. After the holiday break, we resume inviting our legislators but this time we went to the House of Representatives to personally deliver all the authentic invitations to the offices of our legislators.

Second, Ate Gem asked me to do a matrix about the different programs of the government and state in what programs of government the World Vision intervenes and takes place.

Since that the following week is considered Holy Week, so it is more on “rest time”, Ate Gem requested me to attend and help Ate Kitty to document the most important points during the mid-year meeting of the Advocacy department.

Getting to Know World Vision and Advocacy Department

Miriam College demands for the obligatory internship before any student can magnificently fulfill her 4 years of study. Together with the hands-on internship a student must create a blog to write all her daily experiences at the internship site.

As part of my Bachelor’s Degree fulfillment, I have to accomplish the 200 required internship hours at the World Vision Head Office located in Quezon City. In this blog report, I will share to you my daily experiences from April 7, 2014 to May 14, 2014 (estimated time). My internship job, duties and requirements were to the Advocacy Department. Here in the blog, I will share all my experiences that the institution has inculcate me and will teach me in the next days of my internship.

Above all things, as an intern here in World Vision I should know the nature of work that the organization does, who are they and in what areas they’re involved.

Organizational Structure

Advocacy Public & Partnership Department

What comes into your mind when you hear the word Advocacy? Is it support? Activism? Encouragement?

That is the one million dollar question that is raised by our supervisor, Ms. Gem, when we had our initial orientation to the department. She said that Advocacy is not just wearing a statement t-shirt saying (for example) “I support breastfeeding”  to say that you are already an advocate of breastfeeding but the real advocacy is that you are able to affect and change policies towards to what you are advocating for.

The department, to which I belong, works towards to serve as the voice for the children’s well-being and protection. Also, address various structural and systematic causes of poverty by changing policies. Together with their Transformational development approach they are giving voices to the world’s most vulnerable humankind, which are the children. They help in making the needs of the children more visible to those who can and should be meeting them.
